The construction material calculator estimates the quantity of building materials needed for any construction project — whether you are calculating the number of bricks for a wall, cubic metres of gravel for a base, linear metres of skirting board for a room, or square metres of render for a facade. Getting material quantities right before ordering prevents costly second deliveries, material shortages that halt work, and the expense of returning surplus materials. Most construction materials are priced per unit (brick, sheet, bag) or per cubic/square/linear metre, so the right formula depends on whether your material is measured by volume (fills, pours), count (bricks, blocks, tiles), length (rails, boards, skirting), or area (render, plaster, paving).

A consistent 10% waste allowance applies to most materials; this rises to 15% for diagonal-cut patterns, complex shapes, and materials prone to breakage (ceramic tiles, thin stone). For volume materials such as hardcore, gravel, and topsoil, the as-dug density can differ significantly from the compacted density — a 300mm compacted layer of hardcore typically requires 375–400mm of loose material (a bulking factor of 1.25–1.33).

  1. Select the calculation mode by entering dimensions relevant to your material type (volume fill: L×W×D; count: wall area ÷ unit size; linear: total run; area coverage: L×W ÷ coverage rate).
  2. Enter the dimensions in metres. For count materials (bricks, blocks), enter the unit size — a standard UK brick is 215mm × 65mm face (0.215m × 0.065m).
  3. Set the waste percentage (10% for most materials; 15% for cut-intensive layouts).
  4. Read the quantity to order. For volume materials, also note the bulk bag / lorry load equivalents shown in the results.
  5. For linear materials (skirting, handrail, architrave), enter each room run separately or sum all runs before entering.

Material quantity formulas

Volume fill: Order volume = L × W × D × (1 + Waste/100) — all dimensions in metres, result in m³. 1 m³ = 1.5–1.7 tonnes of hardcore/gravel (depending on density).

Count (bricks): Count = Wall area ÷ Brick face area × (1 + Waste/100) — standard UK brick face = 215mm × 65mm = 0.01398 m²; approximately 59 standard bricks per m² of half-brick wall.

Linear: Total = (Run 1 + Run 2 + Run 3) × (1 + Waste/100) — result in metres. Add 10% for mitred corners in skirting and architrave; 5% for simple butt joints.

Area coverage: Quantity = Area × (1 + Waste/100) ÷ Coverage rate — coverage rate from manufacturer data sheet (e.g. kg/m² for render, bags/m² for mortar).

Example (gravel): 8m × 4m patio at 100mm depth, 10% waste. Volume = 8 × 4 × 0.1 × 1.1 = 3.52 m³. At 1.6 tonnes/m³: order approximately 5.6 tonnes (≈ 4 bulk bags of 850kg each).

Packaging and delivery equivalents

Volume materials are sold in bulk bags (typically 850kg = approximately 0.5 m³ for gravel/hardcore, 0.6 m³ for topsoil), loose tipped loads (8–20 tonnes per lorry), or pre-bagged (25kg = approximately 0.015 m³). Concrete blocks are typically sold in packs of 40–60; bricks in pallets of 400–500. Screed bags (25kg) cover approximately 1.6 m² at 25mm depth. Mortar bags (25kg) lay approximately 25 standard bricks. Plaster bags (25kg) cover approximately 3 m² at 10mm depth. Render bags (25kg) cover approximately 1.5 m² at 15mm. Gravel bulk bags (850kg) cover approximately 8 m² at 50mm depth.

Common mistakes to avoid

Material quantity estimates from this calculator are for planning and procurement purposes only. Structural fill materials (e.g. hardcore under foundations) must comply with BS 6543 and NHBC standards; structural concrete must comply with BS 8500. Loadbearing brickwork and blockwork must be designed and specified by a structural engineer in accordance with BS EN 1996 (Eurocode 6). Any construction work requiring Building Regulations approval must use materials that comply with the specification set out in the approved drawings and structural engineer's report.
